Student Advocacy

Student Advocacy at OPE电子竞技官网 encourages student success by:

  • Assisting students experiencing life events and circumstances that can impact their academic pursuits.

  • Providing additional support and guidance to students in complex academic or personal situations.

  • Promoting wellness and a healthy school-life balance.

  • Supporting faculty and staff with concerning students.

Advocacy services aim to support the personal and academic development of students and assist faculty and staff in the creation of a welcoming and effective learning environment at OPE电子竞技官网. ADVOCACY COUNSELORS

Students experiencing personal distress or conflict in or out of the classroom, finding themselves in situations wherein personal circumstances are affecting academics, or who are seeking additional support and guidance could benefit from a connection an OPE电子竞技官网 Advocacy Counselor.

 CONFIDENTIAL Victim/survivor ADVOCATE

OPE电子竞技官网 students and employees of Metropolitan Community College who have experienced or are experiencing domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking or any gender-based harassment or violence are encouraged to reach out for support from an Advocate.

Advocates can provide victims with information, emotional support and referrals to other resources. They can walk you through the various systems you may encounter, including the criminal justice system, legal system, medical system, child protection and safety system, and health and human services. Anyone can access the confidential advocacy programs below for free.

READMITTED STUDENTS

Students returning to OPE电子竞技官网 following suspension or dismissal work with a counselor to complete readmission. Counselors are able to assist students with a comprehensive plan for success that addresses both academic and nonacademic factors that influence success in the classroom. 

PREGNANT & PARENTING STUDENTS

Title IX defines OPE电子竞技官网’s obligation not to discriminate against students on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, and related conditions.  Student Advocacy serves both students and college faculty and staff to support the success of students taking classes during pregnancy and in the postnatal period. If you are pregnant, please use the Pregnancy and Childbirth Accommodation Request form to connect with us for assistance.

COMMUNITY RESOURCES

Resources that address nonacademic concerns such as food insecurity, homelessness, access to healthcare, etc. are available in the community through numerous programs and agencies. Counselors are able to provide guidance and referrals to relevant resources for students seeking additional support. Information regarding community resources in Nebraska can also be found at ne211.org or by dialing 2-1-1. Region 6 services also provides a community resource handbook with an extensive listing of services in Omaha.

STUDENT WELLBEING

Wellness encompasses multiple domains, from physical and mental health to financial security. Student Advocacy seeks to promote student wellbeing in all domains by connecting students with beneficial and impactful information and resources—whether they be on-campus, off-campus or online. 

VIOLENCE PREVENTION

 FOR FACULTY & STAFF

Faculty and staff can find support in Student Advocacy services in their endeavors to teach and serve all students. Counselors are available for consultation regarding any type of distressing behavior that arises in the classroom, can provide training and guidance in concerning situations, and can often offer classroom-based or individual interventions to aid your efforts as you work with students.
